Krispy Kreme Frenzy
November 13, 2006

Some Des Moines Buccaneers fans attempting to cash in on a Krispy Kreme doughnuts promotion on Saturday were disappointed to find that they would have to stop back later in the day to get their doughnut fix. When the Buccaneers scored their sixth goal of the game Friday night with just 2:25 left in regulation, it triggered a frenzy at 95KGGO Arena as fans celebrated what has become a familiar pay-off for Bucs fans.

Krispy Kreme sponsors the “Score 6 and Win” promotion at all Buccaneers home games. When the Bucs score six goals or more, and win the game, fans redeem their game ticket at the Krispy Kreme store in Clive for a free ½ dozen of the original glazed. Unfortunately for some Buccaneers fans, they were informed Saturday morning that they would have to return after 4 P.M. due to the overwhelming number of fans cashing in on the promotion.

"We felt terrible" said Mary Laird, Krispy Kreme spokesperson. "We had to ask the fans to come back because we couldn’t keep up with our regular weekly orders as a result of the number of Buccaneers fans." The Buccaneers scored six goals at home Friday night for the second time this season. "Most fans were very understanding, and we assured them they would get their doughnuts, and be better prepared in the future."

The Buccaneers beat Waterloo 6-4 in front of a standing room only crowd of 3,625, the largest of the season. Brad Chiafos, V.P. of Sales & Marketing for the Des Moines Buccaneers said "We notified Krispy Kreme Friday night following the game as we normally do when we score six or more, but maybe we should have mention the size of the crowd. The "Score 6 and Win" promotion has become huge. The fans start chanting doughnuts as early as 3 or 4 goals, and place comes unglued when we get that sixth goal."

Krispy Kreme honors one ticket-stub per person, and Laird reported that they had collected 777 ticket-stubs on Saturday. Krispy Kreme and the Buccaneers will look at altering the redemption period, which is normally the very next day, to allow fans to redeem their ticket over a two day period. Fans with ticket stubs can also pay an additional $2 and get an entire dozen if they’d like. Laird went on to say “It’s been a great promotion for Krispy Kreme, the fans are great, we just want it to be fun and easy for everyone.
