First Player Gets Drafted Jamie Husgen was the first-ever Buccaneers’ player drafted by the NHl when he was taken in the 12th round by Winnipeg in 1983.
Blue Reaches the NHL In 1992, goaltender John Blue became the first Buccaneers’ alum to play in the NHL when he joined the Boston Bruins. Blue would play 52 NHL games over his career.
A Golden Moment in Billings The Bucs celebrated their final Gold Cup National Championship in 1998, winning the tournament in Billings, MT. Des Moines defeated, Billings, Springfield and Omaha to win their final Gold Cup
Seltenrich’s 51 goal season Daryl Seltenrich netted a franchise record 51 goals during the 1982-1983 season
Bennett’s OT Winner Geoff Bennetts continued the Buccaneers’ 1995 magical season when his goal in double overtime defeated Dubuque in the national tournament semi-finals
Another Comeback Caps “Triple Crown” in ‘95 The Bucs completed their “Triple Crown” season by defeating Omaha in the Gold Cup Finals in 1995. Trailing by one in the final minute of regulation, Reggie Berg tied the game. Then Trevor Rosen won it with his overtime goal.
Crazy Larry in the Stands A fixture at Bucs games throughout the 1990s and beyond, the fan known as “Crazy Larry” helped lead the fans in cheers throughout games. An ardent supporter of the team, “Crazy Larry” can be seen in many photos with the players celebrating various championships.
Warren’s Five Goals Joe Warren set a Bucs’ record, and matched a USHL record, with five goals against Thunder Bay on February 1, 1986
19-Game Winning Streak - Its a USHL record that still stands a decade later, a 19-game winning streak during the 1998-1999 season. It started with a 6-4 win at Twin Cities on 11/198 and ended with a 10-0 victory on 1/6/99 at North Iowa. The Bucs went onto finish the season with 48 wins and 97 points, as well as a Clark Cup Championship.
Hankinson's Clark Cup Clincher - Randy Hankinson brought the Clark Cup to Des Moines for the first time with his OT game winner in the decisive fifth game of the 1992 Finals at Dubuque.
Improbable 1995 Clark Cup Finals - The Bucs scored four unanswered goals in the final 11:18 to win Game Four in Omaha 6-5.Then rallied again at home to win Game Five and the Clark Cup
Philpott Fight- Few single fights are remembered but Ethan Philpott’s fight in the second period of Game Five of the 1995 Clark Cup Finals is the exception. His fight erupted the crowd, stunned Omaha and gave the Bucs themomentum to win 5-1.
1982 Donnybrook - In a 1982 game between the Bucs and Sioux City a full-fledged benches clearing brawl, that included the coaching staffs, occurred at Buccaneer Arena. Reportedly, the brawl commenced when Sioux City players began making light of the fact the Buccaneers had just suffered through the tragic motorcycle death of Bob McCorkle. To this day, McCorkle’s #4 is retired.
