Buccaneers Announce the Return of Scott Owens as Senior Advisor & General Manager

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

DES MOINES, IA - A familiar face to long-time Des Moines Buccaneers fans is being brought back to the organization as the team announces the hiring of Scott Owens as Senior Advisor & General Manager.

Owens has 38 years of coaching experience including 19 seasons in the NCAA and 15 years as General Manager in the United States Hockey League.

I'm very excited to have the opportunity to re-join the Buccaneers organization and work with the ownership of Orchard View Sports & Entertainment,” says Owens. “I'm looking forward to helping Head Coach Peter Mannino, his staff and the entire organization in any way I can. The Bucs have a strong, proud tradition and I'm very pleased to be a part of it!"

Owens was hired as the Des Moines Buccaneers’ Head Coach and General Manager in 1995. His four seasons in Des Moines culminated with the Buccaneers winning the Anderson Cup and Clark Cup in 1999, a year after the Buccaneers also won the 1998 Anderson Cup as regular season champs. During his time with the Buccaneers Owens coached Erik Cole, who would go on to score over 500 points and play in over 900 games in the NHL, and Des Moines native goaltender Scott Clemmensen who played in nearly 200 NHL games in 12 seasons and in 2017 became part of the Des Moines Buccaneers ownership group.

“To say we are excited to have Scott Owens rejoin the Buccaneers would be a great understatement. Scott brings an immediate Championship pedigree to the Buccaneers and we feel very fortunate to have him guide our team,” said Buccaneers President Nate Teut.

Michael Devlin, Managing Partner of Orchard View Sports & Entertainment, said, “Scott brings so many valuable traits with him to the Bucs, we all look forward to benefiting from his knowledge to help us return championship hockey to Des Moines.”

After his time with the Buccaneers, Owens spent 15 seasons as the head coach of Colorado College. During his tenure the Tigers made the NCAA tournament seven times, including a 2005 Frozen Four appearance, where Colorado College fell to the eventual NCAA Champion University of Denver Pioneers, led by freshman goaltender and current Des Moines Buccaneers Head Coach Peter Mannino.

Owens has spent the last five seasons competing against the Buccaneers as the Head Coach/GM of the Sioux Falls Stampede and won the most recent Clark Cup Championship in 2019.
